It’s no longer required here in the great state of PA to go to a brick-and-mortar casino to enjoy games of chance and progressive slots, with the hopes of hitting that next big fortune waiting around the corner. Now that you have the option to turn on your computer or handheld device, there are some things we want you to know before you begin to play for cold, hard cash.
Playing progressive slots in PA —The basics
At the most basic level, if you want to play progressive slots in Pennsylvania, you need an internet connection in Pennsylvania. The IP address for your device must be traced to a connection established in Pennsylvania.
This is because, no matter how much we wish, online gambling is not legal everywhere. After you start surfing the net from any location in Pennsylvania, and providing you are 21 or older, you need to understand the following: anyone who takes part in gambling that is not ‘…specifically authorized by law’ is guilty of unlawful gambling.
This definition is straight out of our state criminal code (section 5512) and absolutely applies to anyone in our great state.
Although we know it’s not reasonable to expect you to read everything in existence about gambling laws here, it is important to understand that we want you to gamble legally. Not only does this keep you a law abiding citizen, it also protects you—many of our rules and regulations exist for the sole purpose of keeping you from getting swindled by shady individuals.
All of that being said, we’d also like you to understand that these definitions leave room for interpretation due to the fact that Pennsylvania code doesn’t (currently) define the word ‘gambling’ anywhere.
Our best advice is to stick to the regulated PA online casinos mentioned here to keep you and your hard-earned cash safe. That last thing you need to deal with is some sort of legal problem when all you were trying to do was gamble honestly and have a good time.
After getting online and picking your casino, you will need to sign up. In order to do so, you must provide personal details in order to register. You will be asked for the following:
- Date of Birth
- Email Address
- Phone Number
- Full Address
- Security Question
- Betting Currency
There may be limits to your account until you provide a scan or fax of your photo ID. Make sure that you have this handy when you sign up, or you may end up stopped before you even start.
PA’s online casinos
There are several casinos that are perfectly legal to use, and we encourage you to check them all out. These are operating under the strictures and codes set forth by the legislature to keep everything above board and legal.
Because online gambling here is still in its infancy, there aren’t a gigantic number of online casinos that we can recommend. However, we absolutely do recommend that you stick with the ones we list here.
Again, this will keep you obeying the law as well as keep your bank account safe from villainous crooks who mean to take your money without providing anything in return.
The following sites are all secure, trusted, and verified:
Though Hollywood Casino isn’t technically in the Golden State, here in the Keystone State, we think you’ll have much better luck. These guys have a 5-star rating in their reviews. In addition to a $25 sign up bonus, Hollywood will match your first deposit (up to $500) with promo code WELCOME. Follow the link and start winning!
Unibet is a close second with 4.8 star rating. At Unibet, you don’t need a promo code. They offer a $10 sign up bonus and also match your deposit up to $500.
Sugar House is very sweet indeed, with a 4.7 star rating. Using promo code 250MATCH, they will match $250 of your first deposit.

- Caesars Casino
- Golden Nugget Casinos

These are the sites we recommend.
One-armed bandit—The origin of progressive slots
To understand where progressive slots came from, you need to go all the way back to the origin of slot machines in the first place.
The nickname given to slot machines in the heyday of gambling was the “one-armed bandit” for obvious reasons—slot machines don’t have the best reputation and have a fairly high house edge. When you see that term “house edge,” know that it’s referring to how much the casino makes.
For example, if the house edge is 5%, that means that for every $100 that you bet, the house will earn an average of $5, and you will lose $5—you only really experience this over time though: thousands and thousands of plays.
Prior to the 20th century, slot machines referred to all automatic vending machines in addition to gambling machines. The early gambling versions are also often referred to as “fruit machines” in Britain, and even on today’s completely digital machines, many of the machines have graphics of fruit, with cherries being the most sought-after symbol. Other images include liberty bells, diamonds, spades, and hearts.
The older machines (that you only really see in museums these days) were cast iron machines with 3 metal hoops called reels. Each reel had 10 symbols painted on them. A lever was pulled to spin the reels, and if each reel stopped on the same symbol, a jackpot was paid in coins dispensed from the machine.
The first electric slot was developed in 1934. This popular machine was an animated horse race machine called Pace’s Races. It wasn’t until the invention of the world wide web that modern progressive slots became possible, although progressive slots still existed once electric slots came into their own.
These machines have come a long way in the last hundred years, and especially in the last three decades.
What are progressive slots?
Knowing that slot machines have such a high house edge, the brilliant folks wanting to increase the popularity of machines came up with progressive jackpots for the machines.
With a progressive jackpot, the jackpot grows each time a bet is made without the bettor hitting said jackpot. As more and more people play a game without hitting it big, that jackpot increases, tempting people to come back to that machine again and again.
This makes perfect sense to us. If you placed a bet and didn’t hit the jackpot, the jackpot increases a bit, and if later you hit that progressive jackpot, not only are you winning the top prize, you’re even getting back some of the money you lost on previous bets.
As casinos grew and slots became more and more popular, this equated to more and more customers; also meaning more and more spins that didn’t hit jackpots. This caused jackpots to increase more and more.
In the last few decades, the popularity of gambling has increased. In that time the popularity of the internet has exploded. It only made sense to offer gambling on the internet.
Now, instead of going to the brick-and-mortar casinos that are overcrowded, you can access these wonderful and exciting games from the comfort of your bedroom in your robe and slippers. This also increased the number of people playing at any given time.
Now that the progressive jackpots are online, the amount of the progressive jackpot increases many times over with all of the additional gameplay and customer base.
What that means for you is that you can play progressive slots from the comfort of your Pennsylvania home that have the potential to pay out millions.
Keeping casinos secure requires a level of sophistication to avoid the shady folks we discussed earlier, such as hackers and con artists. On the other hand, online casinos don’t have to pay the high prices of climate control, large real estate to house you while you play, or the outrageous cost of the machines themselves.
Once the casinos went digital, the reduced costs allowed online casinos to offer more machines and accommodate more players.
With all of the new games only costing what their developers need for the programs written, a larger number of machines is now available to you. The customer base being what it can potentially be, with people making millions of losing bets from home in their PJ’s, these progressive jackpots can continue to climb on each of these games. Needless to say, the amounts reached can be astronomical.
Here we are on the precipice of change, and you can win a large jackpot without even having to hit the ATM machine. There’s no better time for you to play at online Pennsylvania casinos with all of these jackpots reaching record numbers.
The money out there is waiting for you, and now that you can take a pull at home, today is the day for you to take that chance and see if you’re going to be the next jackpot winner.
If you’re as excited about online gambling as we are, you have likely heard about the Divine Fortune slot. If not, you’re in for a treat. This is a progressive slot that has gotten a lot of attention as of late.
Divine Fortune is themed with Greek mythology and features Medusa, minotaurs, and our personal favorite—golden coins. It’s a 5-reel, 3-row, 20-line fixed video slot. There are multiple ways to hit the coveted bonus games. One such way is to trigger respins with the “falling wilds.”
When a wild is displayed on the screen, it triggers respins in an attempt to obtain even more wilds. If the wild lands on the top row of any line, on the following spin, it will be 1 row down in the same reel.
After that respin, it will be on the bottom row of the same reel. If another wild appears during the respin, the same applies for that wild.
Another way to trigger a bonus is of course the popular free spins. The 3rd, and maybe our favorite, is the jackpot bonus game, featuring 3 different jackpots, including the progressive mega jackpot. In order to play the jackpot bonus, you have to get 3 golden coins.
The beauty there is that if you trigger the respins (not to be confused with free spins), every respin that contains a gold coin will jump over to the bucket on the side. If you get 3 total coins during all of the respins, the jackpot bonus is triggered.
Once the jackpot bonus is triggered, 15 special reels appear, and the coins appear on those reels. You get 3 spins, during which if you get 1 or more coin the ‘spins left’ count goes back up to 3.
If you obtain 1 row of gold coins, the minor jackpot is awarded. Two rows will win you the major jackpot, and if all 3 rows are filled with coins, that will award the progressive mega jackpot.
Winning history of Divine Fortune slots
New Jersey has already seen a massive amount of winners since this game was released in 2017. In fact, this game has paid over $3 million and the Garden State has seen Divine Fortune provide for more mega jackpot winners than any other progressive slot in New Jersey.
Our beloved Keystone State just rolled out gambling sites on July 17, 2019, and just a short time later, some of our residents found out just how lucrative this slot can be. On September 1, 2019 at 7:30 am, a woman from Selinsgrove, PA hit the mega jackpot for a win of $196,209 on a $4 bet after playing Divine Fortune for only 17 minutes.
Less than 40 minutes later, a man from Warrington, PA won $57,349 on a $30 bet after playing for less than an hour. Both winners were playing on their desktop computers when they won.
In fact, people were in the chatroom still congratulating the 1st winner when the 2nd hit. This shows that these jackpots can strike anywhere, anytime, regardless of when the last was hit. Lady luck was with these 2 Pennsylvanians on that morning, and we hope you, too, can see wonderful profits now that our great state has legalized online gambling.
